Has any epidemic "Influenza," particularly if characterized by much nervous depression, severe frontal headache, or various muscular pains, shown itself in your Colony?
RECR 86
RECEIVED 10 SEP 30,
There have been some cases of "Influenza" accompanied by depression, headache and muscular pains, the latter marked. In many cases no fever (temperatures taken).
The date of the first occurrence (as far as you know) of such an Influenza: Just week of Jan.
The date of commencement and decline of the epidemic prevalence of such Influenza.
Any evidence as to the mode of origin or introduction of the disease or any opinion on the subject held by the medical adviser of the Government and as to its method of spread.
The cases were at no time numerous in Hongkong to warrant the word "epidemic" being used. For instance, in the British merchants' offices, only a few clerks were absent sick. There were no cases in March.
An English Mail arriving here in January had some cases on board.
The American mails arriving in Jan & Feb. had some cases.
4. Any observations recorded in the Colony as to the behaviour of the Influenza epidemic, both in Hongkong & Kowloon, especially as to its dissemination among particular communities and its incidence on particular localities.
The Chinese complained of much sickness, principally among the poor, together with fever.
I saw some cases which appeared to me to be ordinary Remittent fever. We had no cases present in the Civil (or General) Hospital.
